UK soldier killed in Afghanistan

News Brief – September 1, 2006

Yet another British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan, the seventh since British troops were deployed to southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province at the beginning of August.

In addition, another British soldier was reported badly wounded in the attack by Taliban fighters on Friday.

Last week a British commander announced that British forces would be withdrawing from mountain redoubts in southern Afghanistan to focus on protecting reconstruction efforts in the lowland valleys.

Since first deploying to Afghanistan, Britain has increased its troop numbers by over 1,000 after meeting unexpectedly stiff resistance.

In an ominous new development last week, a senior British official said foreign fighters were beginning to appear among Taliban forces fighting UK forces in Afghanistan.
