UK prime minister backs sanctions against Iran, doesn't exclude military action

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Wednesday that he believed sanctions would restrain Iran's nuclear ambitions, but he again refused to rule out military action.

Michael Meacher, a legislator from Brown's Labour Party, had asked whether the prime minister would give a commitment not to give military, logistical or political support to any U.S. military action against Iran.

Brown declined to do so.

"I believe that we will have to step up our sanctions over the next few weeks," said Brown, who is supporting further sanctions both by the United Nations and the European Union.

"I will rule nothing out, but I do tell him that I believe that the diplomatic route and the sanctions are both having an effect, and if stepped up can have an even bigger effect in the future," he said in the House of Commons.
