Television has largely usurped their [parents] role, and there is truly very little they can do about it. Psychologist Kenneth Keniston, chairman of the Carnegie Council on Children, has concluded that "television has become a flickering blue parent occupying more of the waking hours of American children than any other single influence – including both parents and schools. Nearly one million school-age children do not attend school; another million children return from school daily to a house with no one home. For these two million, a television set is ready and waiting--and the statistics indicate that each of these two groups is increasing, rather than decreasing, in size. There can be no doubt who is raising the children while no parent is at home – skilled producers of television programs and commercials.” (pp. 199-200)

I repeat. “...skilled producers of television programs and commercials” with sleight of hand second only to Las Vegas card sharks, have become your children’s ‘flickering blue parent’ and they are busybusybusy ‘raising them’ in the image and likeness of themselves. Columbine, Oh Columbine! These land sharks have their teeth on your children and they have absolutely no intention of relaxing their jaw.

‘Shockwaves through the industry’ just because a few people turned off their television sets? I wonder what would happen if a lot of people turned off their TVs. Do you think we could send a reallllllly big, terrifying shockwave through the industry? You think maybe we could show some real courage, exercise some REAL power? Hey, let’s do it. Let’s try it. Let’s have some fun with them for a change. They’ve been having ‘way too much fun at our expense. Isn’t it time we gave them a dose of their own malevolence?
They have held you long enough. They probably had their teeth in your parents, and your parent’s parents. They’ve been at this game for over fifty years. If you want to escape you must do it on your own. No one can turn off your television for you. It’s no small matter considering the pervasiveness of the programming. There is a tremendous amount of social pressure designed to prevent you from even entertaining the idea of escaping their influence. They view you, and your children, as their wealth, current and future. To them you are nothing but livestock and they own the farm.
They will raise your children to their specifications, just as you and your parents were raised. Only the specifications no longer resemble anything so trivial as a sudden fever for acquiring Cabbage Patch dolls. They have already proved that they can control huge numbers of people and cause them to behave in ridiculous ways. Football fans are an excellent example of their adroit ability to hypnotize the masses. Ever wonder what football fanship has to do with anything really important or meaningful in life? Nothing. It is a ‘false need’.
