Images of the toppling of Saddam’s Hussein’s statues are everywhere in the mainstream media. Touted by commentators as representing the spirit of the moment; clear evidence that Hussein’s rule is over and the war is effectively drawing to a close.
Or at least the fighting is coming to an end and now, we are told, begins the battle to get aid to a beleaguered Iraq.
However far from being over we may have just witnessed the opening phase of a much bigger war; one that will spread and ultimately engulf not just the Middle East but maybe even the whole planet.
Emboldened by the rapid collapse of Hussein’s regime some in Washington are now calling for a more aggressive pursuit of the “War Against Terror”. New targets are being lined up and the opening phase, wherein the public is being readied psychologically for further conflict, is now well underway.
Thus John Bolton, under secretary of state for arms control and international security, told reporters in Rome recently he hoped Iran and Syria get the message from Hussein’s downfall.
"We are hopeful that a number of regimes will draw the appropriate lesson from Iraq that the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction is not in their national interest,” he said.
The US regards both as sponsors of terrorism and says that they are both trying to acquire Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).
So in effect various spokesmen are now preparing the way for the next stage of the “War on Terror.” By naming Iran and Syria in the same context as “terrorism” and “WMD” they are conditioning the public; preparing them to view the two countries as potential enemies. Just as they once did with the Taleban and then Iraq, the ground is being prepared for future conflict.
Accordingly, U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld recently claimed that the United States had evidence that Damascus may have helped Saddam Hussein`s relatives and supporters flee the country. In much the same way that he once said the US had evidence of Iraq’s WMD, that evidence has yet to be made available for public scrutiny. Nonetheless the effect is the same: new targets are being held up and the public is being primed.
Sometimes this is done before it becomes official policy, often long in advance. Thus ‘experts’ and figures from former US Administrations are wheeled out to pronounce knowingly on whatever is at hand, in this case the threat posed by Iraq and Syria.
Hence Frank Gaffney, a senior Pentagon official under President Reagan, was recently quoted as saying that ‘regime change’ should be US policy toward Iran and Syria. Military force might be a last option, he told Reuters, but: "If the threat metastasises in such a way that we consider it to leave us no choice but to use military force then that would have to be an option.”
In other words military force could be used whenever it was perceived as necessary.
The trouble is that this is more than mere speculation. We have already been told that the “War on Terror” might last decades. Now evidence is emerging that plans are well underway for a large-scale mobilisation of US forces, bigger than the first Gulf War and as big, if not bigger than WWII. (1)
It might take another year or two yet but the possibility of the western alliance waging war with Iran and Syria is becoming ever more likely. And this we are told by a clairvoyant who accurately foresaw the current crisis in Iraq two years ago.
However, he says, the potential conflict with Iran is still being discussed. Nothing has been decided just yet because Iraq is still not entirely in the hands of the western alliance, despite what the media may say. When it is that final decision will be made and the plans carried out. But pivotal to those plans being carried out is an Israeli/Palestinian settlement, that would be used a trump card to appease Muslim anger.
That, according to our clairvoyant friend, would simply be a ruse to defuse Muslim fury and secure the ultimate objective: Iran’s valuable oil reserves.
So despite being pronounced as symbolic of Saddam’s fall from power, the image of his toppled statue may simply mark the opening round of a much bigger war. Only time will tell but the next two weeks could be of historic significance.
