Involve Queen in Diana inquest – QC
News Brief – May 15, 2007

Lawyers acting on behalf of Mohamed al Fayed have launched a bid to involve the Queen in the inquest into the deaths of Dodi al-Fayed and Diana, Princess of Wales.

They want the Queen to be "directly approached" over claims she warned former royal butler Paul Burrell that there were "powers at work in this country which we have no knowledge about".

Mr Burrell, who previously worked for the princess, made the claim after the collapse of his Old Bailey trial for theft. The Queen, said Burrell, issued the warning shortly after Princess Diana’s death.

Michael Mansfield, al Fayed's lawyer, said that police documents supplied to his team had deleted any mention of what the queen allegedly told Burrell, and that she should be asked about the allegations.

"In as far as you're saying that Her Majesty should be directly approached, I think that's unheard-of," Butler-Sloss said.

Nonetheless, she left open the possibility that the deleted material could be made available.
