Britain's home-grown al Qaeda plots increase: paper

News Commentary – February 25, 2007

Citing what it says are "secret intelligence documents", London’s Sunday Telegraph reports that more than 2,000 al Qaeda terrorists are plotting suicide attacks in the UK.

According to the document, the terror threat is at its highest level since September 11, 2001.

"The scale of al Qaeda's ambitions towards attacking the UK and the number of UK extremists prepared to participate in attacks are even greater than we had previously judged," the Sunday Telegraph quotes the document as saying.

However, bearing in mind that it was the Sunday Telegraph that broke the story maintaining that Saddam Hussein’s Weapons of Mass Destruction could be deployed in 45 minutes, the integrity of the paper's claims should be highly suspect.

The veracity of the Daily Telegraph’s political editor, Con Coughlin, has also been called into question after the Press Complaint Commission (PCC) received complaints about its coverage of Iran.

Coughlin’s writing is already under investigation by the PCC following complaints about an article in last month’s Telegraph that claimed Iran was “grooming Bin Laden’s successor”.

Although Coughlin was not responsible for the article claiming more than 2,000 al Qaeda terrorists were plotting suicide attacks in the UK, it follows a similar pattern as Coughlin’s earlier articles.

As with Coughlin’s articles, the article on a revived al Qaeda makes assertions that cannot be independently verified.

Like Coughlin’s articles, these seem gauranteed to generate public alarm, in this case that more than 2,000 al Qaeda terrorists were planning suicide attacks.

But that may be the intention. After all, Fleet Street was rife with reports of Saddam Hussein’s Weapons of Mass Destruction prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In its aftermath however, they were all proven to be utterly groundless but at the time they served to justify the invasion.

Which prompts one to wonder: what exactly is behind these reports of a revived al Qaeda and an increased terror threat to the UK.

As we have reported elsewhere, some disaffected intelligence insiders are now openly ackowledging that the 7/7 terror attacks were the work British intelligence.

So is the report on an increased al Qaeda threat to the UK intended to ratchet up public concern in the run-up to another false flag terror attack? And will the supposed increased threat of terror attacks in the UK be linked to Iran?

Only time will tell but one thing is certain: nothing in the mainstream media can be taken at face value because as the publicity given Saddam’s supposed WMD proves, much of it serves a hidden aganda.
