Columbia: An Act of God?
|
The break up of the shuttle Columbia has stirred a deep uneasiness in the collective American psyche. As several readers have already noted the space shuttle carrying Israel’s first astronaut, Col. Ilan Ramon of the Israeli Air Force apparently broke up over an East Texas town called Palestine.
Ilan Ramon was a national hero in Israel, having been part of the air raid 22 years ago that shattered Saddam Hussein’s earliest attempt to develop nuclear weapons.
In itself this is some coincidence, prompting some to wonder: was this an act of God?
But there may be another reason to ask this question, one that is even more compelling.
Yesterday’s tragedy will undoubtedly ground the remaining shuttles and may even put the program to build a permanent manned space station on hold, possibly forever. With that in view it’s worth bearing the words of Lee Brown in mind. Spoken in 1986 at the Continental Indigenous Council in Fairbanks, Alaska, they have a direct bearing on yesterday’s events.
According to Lee Brown: “They said they're going to build what the elders called the "house in the sky." In the 1950's they talked about this: they will build a house and throw it in the sky. When you see people living in the sky on a permanent basis, you will know the Great Spirit is about to grab the earth, this time not with one hand, but with both his hands. Many of you of Native background may have heard "the spirits will warn you twice, but the third time you stand alone." We've had two warnings, the first two World Wars, but now we stand-alone before the third one. As it says in the Baha's Writings, there will be no one protected. When this house is in the sky, the Great Spirit is going to shake the Earth a third time and whoever dropped the gourd of ashes; upon them it is going to drop.”
