Now Israel Threatens to Destroy Iran
News Brief – May 8, 2006

After Iran’s President warned that Israel’s “Zionist regime” would soon be annihilated, the Times of London reports that Israel has responded with its own threats.

Under a suitably innocuous headline “Israel issues warning to Iran”, the Times reports that Israeli vice premier Shimon Peres warned Iran that it too could be destroyed if it continues to threaten Israel.

"Be careful with your threats," Peres warned Iran.

"Those who threaten to destroy are in danger of being destroyed," he told a TV channel.

Israel has grown increasingly concerned in recent months by calls from Iran's leader to wipe Israel off the map as Iran continues to develop its nuclear programme.

Many believe that Iran is working to develop nuclear weapons and has moved to impose sanctions against the country in the UN Security Council.

Nonetheless, Iran says its enrichment of uranium is entirely for peaceful purposes.
