The Worm Turns

Even the public polls, usually reporting what the subscribers wish them to report, are showing that the Bush cabal is losing badly on all fronts. This is how it usually goes. Pride does go before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction.

Bush was jobbed into his office by a group of prominent citizens who were annoyed by the liberalism of the Clinton era and determined to make an effort to get a figurehead into the White House that would do as they wished. Bush was seen as the perfect candidate. A loser with low self esteem, the pampered eldest son of a wealthy family, a failure in school, business and in his personal life, a failure in the military and best of all, a weak man who was easily controlled by the brilliant Karl Rove, a master manipulator with no scruples and the ability to completely control Bush.

The election in 2000 was stolen with the assistance of high level Republicans, to include the Governor of Florida, Bush’s younger brother, and a pliable Supreme Court, not the public, put him into the Oval Office.

Bush, through Rove, shamelessly courted the far right, the business community and, very important the very well-organized evangelical so-called Christian Right. What the latter lacked in sanity, they more than made up for in their fanatical organization. Bush catered to these core groups , slyly, using code phrases and knowing winks mixed with private, and reassuring meetings with leaders of both the far right, the businessmen and the Jesus freaks.

His foreign policy was promptly taken over by the so-called neo cons, a group of hardcore right wingers, almost all of whom were either Israeli citizens or strong supporters of that country, and advocates of a brand of active, military-based American imperialism not seen since the heyday of the British Empire.

It does strongly appear that the top levels of the U.S. intelligence agencies and via them, the very top levels of the White House advisors, were fully aware that Muslim activists were planning to strike at prominent American business and governmental symbols. The German government, the very effective Israeli Mossad, the Russians and others all gave ample and timely warnings to Washington about the forthcoming attacks and in spite of this flood of documented warnings, the White House (who had to initiate such measures) never issued a single warning to any of the American military and civil units who were tasked with the defense of key targets on the east coast.

On the day of the attack, the President and his highest staff members all flew to Florida so that the President could read a book, “My Pet Goat,” to a group of kindergartners at a minority school. It is interesting to note that Bush never did such a thing prior to 911 and certainly never after.

The war against Iraq, a nation rich in oil reserves, had been decided on long before 911 and this incident, like the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, supplied the administration an excellent reason for rallying the indifferent American public behind the idea of a Holy Crusade.

The one outstanding hallmark of the current Bush Administration is its aggressive untruthfulness and the secondary hallmark is its callous disregard of the conventions of civilized nations. State-approved torture, assassinations, military threats, overweening arrogance have blotted the reputation of the United States for decades to come.

But as all things do, the Bush machinery, built to ensure a permanent Republican majority in the Legistature, a court system subservient to Republican desires and a military ever ready to enforce Republican imperialism began to falter and then begin the awful process of disintegration and internal collapse.

The President has seen his popularity melt away like a snowball in Hell, his top aides removed from his side by criminal indictments, a slow-down of the economy, and most important, a weakening of the American defense community to the point where it will prove useless in case of a real, not manufactured, emergency.

The perceived disregard by the Administration for the sufferings, repeatedly shown on national television, of poor and despised blacks is something that has proven to be a watershed in public opinion but the behavior of the Bush machine has always predicted its inevitable destruction.

George W. Bush and his claque have proven to be the most divisive ruling entity ever seen in American history but out of his gleefully created havoc, hopefully a new national unity of purpose will arise and the legions of corrupt, self-serving politicians and an even larger contingent of religious and political fanatics will so disgrace themselves as to make them helpless for the same long decades that Karl Rove saw them in iron control of this nation.
