Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron has taken a new job as a United Nations Messenger of Peace to tackle the “quite horrific” statistic in her home country of South Africa, where a woman is raped every 26 seconds.
“The statistics on rape cases were quite horrific,” Theron told reporters at a New York press conference. “One in every three women is raped in her lifetime and the number was devastating [....] It is getting worse.”
Theron began tackling the issue of rape in South Africa back in 1999 when she founded the Cape Town Rape Crisis Centre, and says she said now needs the support of the UN to fight rape more effectively.
