A senior aide to embattled World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz has resigned, saying the scandal surrounding Wolfowitz made it difficult for him to be effective in his role.
Mr Wolfowitz has been mired in a controversy after he awarded a hefty pay rise to his girlfriend at the bank, Shaha Riza.
Speaking by telephone, Kevin Kellems said he had resigned to pursue other career options.
‘Given the current environment surrounding the leadership of the World Bank Group, it is very difficult to be effective in helping to advance the mission of the institution,’ he said
“I have tremendous respect and admiration for the Bank staff and management,” he added.
Despite growing calls for his resignation, Wolfowitz has vowed to stay on.
However, Kellems resignation is likely to add to the pressure on Wolfowitz to resign.
