Tunnel full of weapons discovered in Syrian capital

Press TV – August 14, 2012

Syrian security forces have discovered a tunnel under a house in the capital, Damascus, with a large amount of weapons and ammunition stored inside.

Israeli-made bombs, night vision goggles, sophisticated telecommunication equipment and a satellite sender were among things confiscated.

Syrian troops also discovered documents detailing insurgents’ planned attacks on strategic locations. Stolen medicines were also found in the tunnel.

A number of insurgents were also arrested after security forces stormed the house. The tunnel was discovered in Old Damascus on Saturday.

Syria, which has been experiencing unrest since last year, has repeatedly said that weapons used by armed groups fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad are being smuggled into the country from Turkey and Lebanon.

Syria has also accused Saudi Arabia and Qatar, of fueling unrest in the country by funding and arming the anti-Syria gunmen.

Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since mid-March, 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on August 1 that the country is engaged in a ”crucial and heroic” battle that will determine the destiny of the nation.
