Study: A Diet High In Animal Protein Associated With A 75 Percent Increased Risk of Early Death

Are we designed to eat meat? According to Dr. Christina Warinner, a microbiome scientist, anthropologist, and a Professor in the Department of Archaeogenetics at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, no, we’re not. As she states in one of her TEDx talks, “Humans do not have any specialized genetic anatomical or physiological adaptations to meat consumption. By contrast, we have many adaptations to plant consumption.” She was also featured in the recently released popular documentary The Game Changers, where she makes the exact same statement. This is not an appeal to authority, I just think it’s necessary to point to well researched individuals who provide solid evidence of their hypothesis.

A study published in 2014  in Cell Metabolism found that a diet high in animal protein is strongly associated with a 75 percent increased risk of early death from all causes. It also found that a diet high in animal protein increased risk of premature death from most forms of cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes, by 400 to 500 percent.

What’s interesting that these associations were found with animal protein, and that “These associations were either abolished or attenuated if the proteins were plant derived.

The researchers of the study state:

When the percent calories from animal protein was controlled for, the association between total protein and all-cause or cancer mortality was eliminated or significantly reduced, respectively, suggesting animal proteins are responsible for a significant portion of these relationships. When we controlled for the effect of plant-based protein, there was no change in the association between protein intake and mortality, indicating that high levels of animal proteins promote mortality and not that plant-based proteins have a protective effect.

You can refer to the study for more details.

It’s important to note that this isn’t the only study to point out such strong associations, for example, this study found that  people who ate animal protein experience a 60 percent increase in cardiovascular disease, while people whose source of protein were plants experienced a 40 percent *reduction* in cardiovascular disease. It was another big study, 81,000 people were analyzed. Plant protein protected against heart and vascular disease while all meats increased it.

I’ve written a lot about this topic, and gone into much more detail. I was inspired to put out this tidbit of information after watching and being inspired by The Game Changers documentary. In it, I definitely learned a lot more interesting information that goes beyond the science.

It addresses many concerns, like where B12 really comes, and how plant foods have all of the essential amino acids, among other interesting facts that are not really well known. One eye opening revelation was that if you look many of the studies that promote meat, eggs and dairy as healthy and necessary, they are predominately funded by the food companies themselves. Many these food companies and associations actually hired a company called “Exponent” to conduct and publish research. What’s interesting is that Exponent inc. was the same company that published research debunking the link between cigarettes (tobacco) and cancer. In fact, for more than 50 years Exponent has generated numerous studies that challenge the health risks of mercury, DDT. glyphosate, arsenic, formaldehyde. alcohol, PCB’s, oil pollution…the list goes on. It seems that they are also doing the same with meat.

  1. The author has not bothered to review many recent as well as old studies that have come to the opposite conclusion i.e. that meat, eggs and dairy are fine!
Probably the health issues found in the studies that are blamed on meat, eggs and dairy are actually due to just eating too much!
This an age old issue, starting with the low carbohydrate ‘Atkins Diet’ 50 years ago, with innumerable studies on both sides.
Also many children brought up on vegan diets are malnourished.

  2. Besides, it’s OBVIOUS that milk and eggs are the ultimate superfoods.
The chicken embryo lives and grows to be a baby chick exclusively on the contents of the egg!
Similarly the baby calf’s only food after it is born is cow milk and that’s all it needs to grow into a self sufficient calf that can eat grass etc.

If a person is overweight, or inactive and/or stressed then it’s different.

  3. What a bunch of BS! Scientific studies: Association/Correlation IS NOT Causation. Not all details are explained. Example: Many people go shopping at 7-11 for last minute convenience items. Some of those people injured themselves on that trip to 7-11! By this association, I can say 7-11 causes people to get hurt/injured. That is wrong, because I forgot to mention that when all those trips to 7-11 were taken it was snowing. It was the snowfall that caused the injuries not 7-11. Next, if we were to eat only plant-based or plant food our teeth would be anatomically different. A cow’s/horse’s teeth (plant eaters) are vastly different from a Lion’s or PolarBear’s ( meat eaters) teeth.

Next, if I eat a 4 oz. (120 g) steak, I get certain nutrients of various kinds. If I wanted to get some of the same nutrients from plants, I would have eat 3 lbs. (1.25 kg) of almonds and/or the same amount of Lettuce. Not all plant food produces all the right nutrients.
Also for example that Steak/Pork/Chicken has some nutrients and Amino Acids that plants can NOT produce, Iron from hemoglobin being one. The different meats give us different Amino Acids. You would have to discover some new plantlife that produces the different Amino Acids that meats have. And if they did, you would have to eat a lot of that plant.

Next, yes different food groups have lobby groups, associations or marketing boards, but so do plant food or plantlife groups, like Florida or California Citrus growers or Leafy green growers, Avocado growers, etc. Just because some groups lobby something, does not make them bad or even good. Lobbying/promotion is that groups JOB! As for research groups like “Exponent”, their job is to do research and publish the results. The issue is what do they do with the results (data) and how do they present them. Studies like Statistics can be made to say anything you want, the data manipulation is the key and also the problem. It comes down to methodology: was it correct. Just for fun: do you know that both jello and candy bars can cause cancer. What? Yes, if you eat too much of them, you may get cancer, despite that they both taste good. The problem is that they both contain Tartrazine (a preservative just like food dyes) that in large quantities causes cancer. From all this background, that is why this article is Hogwash!

  4. Maybe they were fed dog meat, cat meat or even scorpions like they eat in China!
No disrespect to dog and cat lovers! Remember the movie Soylent Green. The Climate Change Elite are also encouraging cannibalism – eat other humans if dead!

  5. Total rubbish I am in my mid 50s and started a Keto based lifestyle about 6 months ago not only have I lost a significant amount of weight I feel younger and healthier than I have in decades. I eat a predominately high protein red meat diet with some dairy and very little plant stuffs. The most important thing I have done is eliminating as much as possible sugar and carbs.
