Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei has named the U.S., Israel and Iran’s main regional adversary Saudi Arabia as the principle instigators behind the recent unrest in the country.
According to Khamenei peaceful economic demonstrations were commandeered last week by agents in the pay of Iran’s enemies, who turned into them into anti-government protests.
The timing of the protests was significant. This Friday President Trump will announce whether he will renew sanctions on Iran or not.
Had the protests escalated significantly he probably would have had grounds for renewing them. As it is Trump may still do so.
But the fact that the protests didn’t escalate means that many Iranians, even those who don’t support necessarily Khamenei, will see them as another failed U.S. attempt at regime change. Just as it had tried in Syria, until Russia and Iran intervened, the U.S. seems intent on regime change in Tehran.
But far from weakening it the recent protests may even have strengthened Iran. Because as Iranians recognize renewed attempts at regime change they are likely rally behind the Ayatollah Khamenei.
Despite what the western corporate media may claim, Iran is far from being on the brink of revolution. Of course there are economic problems, which are being deliberately exacerbated by sanctions.
However, although there are undoubtedly genuine grounds for grievance, this is not the stuff of which revolutions are made. Moreover, the more the U.S. and its allies try to make it so, the less likely they are to succeed.
One need only look at the 2009 Iranian election protests, which were much bigger and more widespread, to see evidence of that. Western covert operations were actively involved in both the 2009 protests and last week’s but the most recent unrest was a damp squib in comparison to the earlier protests.
Perhaps more significant were warnings from the Ayatollah and some of his senior lieutenants that Iran would “retaliate” for attempts to incite unrest.
What shape that retaliation will take and when it will happen is anyone’s guess but the long-standing animosity between America and Iran looks set to continue. No matter what position Trump takes on the nuclear accord on Friday. Ed.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami repeated the Tuesday warning of the Iranian leader that the country would give a crushing response to Washington’s attempts to incite riots in Iran.

“Our country, as an independent state, has always shown that it would never keep quiet against such damage,” General Hatami told FNA after a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.

He referred to the Tuesday remarks by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei who warned Washington of Iran’s retaliatory measures, and said, “They (the Americans) have received a decisive response wherever they have inflicted damage on our country and this time they will certainly receive a response as such.”

Addressing a large gathering of Iranian people from the Central city of Qom in Tehran on Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei blamed the US, the Zionist regime, certain regional states and Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO, also known as the MEK, PMOI and NCRI) for the recent riots and unrest in Iran, warning Washington of Iran’s response.

The leader warned the US statesmen that they will fail in their plots against Iran similar to the past and during the recent unrests.

“You inflicted damage on Iran in these days (of unrests) and this will not remain unanswered,” he underlined, addressing the US rulers.

Ayatollah Khamenei also addressed US President Donald Trump, warning him that he will pay the price for his theatrical crazy moves.

“All moves against us, by the enemy over the past 40 years, have been attacks on the Islamic Revolution. The Revolution politically eradicated the enemy from Iran. Once again, the nation tells the US, Britain, and those who seek to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran from abroad that you’ve failed, and you will fail in the future, too,” he said.

“Regarding the recent events, there have been various analyses. There is a correct point commonly made: that is separating people’s honest and rightful demands from the violent and vandalizing moves by a certain group; these two must be separated,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“According to the proof presented in the intel, there has been a triangle activating these events. The scheme was formed by the US and Zionists. The money came from a wealthy government near the Persian Gulf, and the third element was the henchmen. The butchers, MEK, were hired as minions for this plot,” he added.
