An Iranian general says his country’s air defenses have warned off several U.S. fighter jets and drones during an ongoing military drill in the country’s south.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency on Wednesday quoted Gen. Abbas Farajpour making the claim.
Farajpour said: “In the past three days of military drills, the air defense has given warnings to 12 aircraft of trans-regional countries to stay away from the country’s airspace.”
Calls to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, rang unanswered Wednesday. In recent months, the 5th Fleet has complained about interactions with Iran’s military at sea and in the air.
Iranian air defense units began an exercise involving 17,000 personnel stationed over 496,000 square kilometers (191,505 square miles) in southern Iran on Monday.

Iran tested its state-of-the-art missile systems in its large-scale air defense drills codenamed Modafe’an-e Aseman-e Velayat 7 in the Southern parts of the country on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s military drills included the participation of the forces debuting the Talash (Endeavor) missile defense system on the Southern Khark Island to destroy mock intruding drones.
Wednesday marked the third and final day of Modafe’an-e-Aseman-e Velayat 7 maneuvers featuring weapons of the Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).
On Tuesday, two home-made missile defense systems, Talaash (Endeavor) and S-200, were deployed in Southern Iran during the second day of massive air defense drills underway in the region.
This is the first time that a Talaash missile defense system has been deployed in the Southern parts of the country.
The two defense shields are due to fire missiles at simulated enemy targets in the next stages of the 5-day wargames.
The Iranian Armed Forces exercised combat operations and electronic warfare tactics on the first day of the massive Air Defense wargames on Monday.
